Stem the Tide of Junk Mail

If your mailbox is sagging under the weight of junk mail, here are a few ideas for stemming the tide.

Transcript

Did you know that direct mail – a.k.a. junk mail – now outnumbers first-class mailings? If your mailbox is sagging under the weight, register with the Direct Marketing Association at dmachoice.org. It's the leading trade organization for companies that send direct mail. When you register, your name is put in a "delete" file that is sent to DMA's thirty-six hundred members to check against their mailing lists.

Not every marketer belongs to DMA, so registering won't stop all mailings. And, it won't stop mailings from companies or nonprofits you already do business with. To get off their lists you'll have to contact them directly.

Bottom line: Registering with the DMA won't completely halt all junk mail, but you can at least turn the flood into a trickle.
