Transitioning from the Military

If you or someone you know is preparing to leave the military, consider these tips for a smooth and easy transition to civilian life.

Transcript

Reentering the civilian workforce after a military career is tough even during good times. But with today's high unemployment, newly minted veterans may need extra help developing a game plan. Here are a few tips:

Check with organizations that help link job seekers with military-friendly employers, including Hire a Hero and Vetjobs.com. Make sure your resume is civilian-ready and watch out for military jargon others may not understand. Develop a budget you can live with, since money could be tight during your transition. And learn about financial support available to veterans for education and housing at gibill.va.gov.

Bottom line: Make it an easier transition by using the resources you've earned.
