Be Careful What You Post Online

Find out which information to refrain from posting online, and about online scams to watch out for.

Online networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have revolutionized how people stay in touch with friends, hunt for jobs and even start whole social movements. But when it comes to sharing personal information, especially for children, keep these precautions in mind:

• Deleting an email doesn't mean it no longer exists.

• Many colleges and employers conduct online searches of potential candidates, looking for red flags.

• Identity thieves often harvest personal information, like your pet's name to guess passwords, so never make your passwords too obvious.

• And finally, warn your kids about predatory adults posing as peers or friends online.

Bottom line: Social media can be a great resource–just don't put yourself at risk.
